she’s already dead

My Doctor Who binge has been continuing, and I’ve noticed this thing they do that is so creepy, and so cool. I think I’m going to have to use it, or a variation on it, if ever I get the chance.

It goes like this:

We get to know and love a secondary character (they’ve all been women so far); the secondary character volunteers/is forced to do something dangerous; they work away in the background of a scene doing their thing; later in the scene the Companion comments on their activity, asks the Doctor to make them stop/save them; the Doctor says “She’s already dead”.

So good!

The moment of death – the moment where you can attempt to save them, or at least say goodbye – has already passed without comment. And it rewrites, retrospectively, their actions throughout the scene, as well as giving their continuing activity a much more inexorable and sinister edge.

I look around, and here I am - housewife and aspiring romance novelist. This seems unexpected.
